In our house our family life really does revolve around the kitchen. Meals are prepared and eaten here, cakes are baked, bread raises. Pictures are drawn, play dough is rolled. conversations are had and tea is drunk.
But my kitchen is no glossy magazine ad. the unfortunate reality is my kitchen has to be the most unpleasant room I have ever had the displeasure of being in. The colour is wrong, the lighting is really wrong, the cabinets and bench tops are so wrong. There is not enough storage and the bench space allows only one person at a time to do anything in there, which is crazy considering the room is the largest in the house.
But complete kitchen renos don't come cheap, so until we find that money tree, my goal is create a beautiful space for my family to use and enjoy.

Oh, I understand completely! The kitchen is the last on our renovation list and it is such a bother. We removed one wall of the kitchen during the major reno, taking with it most of the bench space and all of the drawers. So we have no cutlery drawer and no space. Nightmare! And everything is salmon in colour. So I must say, I still think yours is much nicer than mine, especially with those timber benches and plate racks. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Christina, it's amazing what the right light and angle can do, my husband asked whose place it was when he looked through the photos. If I'm ever brave enough I might post a picture of my kitchen in all its glory, but I'm glad it's not salmon! Any major renovation is a pain, especially when you have littlies about.
DeleteYes, angles and lighting are helpful! I should post a current pic of my kitchen too. This is how it looked when we brought it, but it is more pinky than orange in colour in real life - http://www.flickr.com/photos/38477182@N06/6061184019/
DeleteWe have since removed the entire wall on the right, which will eventually be replaced by an island. Which means we just have that L shaped part on the left. See that bit of bench space? It houses my kettle, toaster, microwave and knife block, meaning there is almost no bench space. Thus, I knead my bread on the dining room table and stack everything around me like tetris when I cook. :)
Hi Kate
ReplyDeleteI understand completely. Our kitchen came with orange square tiles for the bench. No matter how much you cleaned it, it just didn't feel right.
But you can always still make if homey. :)
Hi Sarah,
DeleteNo, tiles on bench tops are so not right!
Thanks for following, it's really appreciated.
